A long layover and no Visa needed? Head out to the city! During a long layover, it is so worth it to leave the Airport and visit the City. Most cities have a good transfer system so you won’t miss any time here and you can enjoy the city as much as possible. See here my day in Hong Kong during my 15-hour layover.
How to get to the city?
When I went to Australia I had a 15-hour layover in Hong Kong, and our question was; How can we see the city in just 15 hours?
Well, you can! We did not need a visa so we wanted to see the city. We did some research about the transfer and sightseeing spots and we made a list of the spots we wanted to visit.
Early in the morning, we arrived at the airport in Hong Kong and we took the Airport Express to the city. From there we wanted to take the Ngong Ping Cable Car, but unfortunately, it was closed so we had to take a public bus. It was cheaper but less comfortable and it took way longer, but we could see the nice scenery as well.
The Giant Buddha (Tian Tan Buddha)
Our first stop was The Giant Buddha, around here are more sightseeing spots so we could combine them. When we arrived at the bus stop we walked through the White Gate and entered the Ngong Ping Piazza. The Buddha is 34 meters high and you have to survive the 268 steps in the heat to get to the platform. From there you have an amazing view! You can see the other sightseeing spots from here and you see the beautiful mountain scenery.
The Wisdom Path is really worth a visit if you are already here! It is really calm out here and completely in nature. On the wooden boards are wisdom written in Chinese.
Po Lin Monastery
Because there were still monks at the Monastery we could not make photos inside, but from the outside it was already beautiful! This architecture is so interesting, I really want to see more of Asia.
From The Giant Buddha you. have a really nice view of the Po Lin Monastery between the mountains.
Our last stop was Victoria Harbour, we wanted to go to Victoria Peak as well but we were too tired from the trip so we did not do that anymore, unfortunately. Because we were too tired we spend our last hours at the airport.
In the harbour the Star Ferry is a well known ferry, from here you can go to Kowloon. We did not do this as well, but we had a lunch at the harbour and we enjoyed the Skyline view and went back to the airport.
